Remember when Instagram was launched back in 2010? I know it looks like Instagram has been around forever but back then, it was like having a celebrity join your school. Everyone couldn’t stop talking about it and everyone just really wanted an experience to share with friends. Twitter became the old popular guy who was familiar but not just quite it.
Trust me, Instagram didn’t disappoint, before everyone knew it; Instagram had over 400 million users which is more than Facebook or Twitter can boast of. As Instagram grew, so did the possibilities it offered its users and one of the possibilities was advertising your business on Instagram.
So you can sit back and Instagram does the work for you. Sounds too easy, right? Well, it is just what it is.

IS INSTAGRAM AD A RIGHT STEP FOR YOU?
A good question to ask yourself first is who isn’t on Instagram these days? With over 400 million users, Instagram advertises your business to more people than a store at the corner of your street ever will.
The best part is Instagram helps you even target your specific audience, it gives you options on genders, age grades, behaviours, location and so much more. So if you’re asking if Instagram ads are the right step for you, then yea, you need to turn in that direction.
ARE INSTAGRAM ADS EXPENSIVE?
The cost of Instagram ads varies and it all depends on many factors. Instagram charges in different ways, it could charge based on clicks or on impressions and the prices are apparently determined by Instagram’s ad auction.
The prices vary and could be up to $5 but this is mostly because it targets a much larger audience than even Facebook does. But here’s another amazing thing, Instagram allows you to set a budget and schedule when your ads run, your delivery methods and other things to control your budget. Great, right?

But first, let’s talk about how to create an Instagram ad via Facebook Ads Manager.
HOW TO CREATE AN INSTAGRAM AD USING FACEBOOK ADS MANAGER
Facebook Ad Manager allows you to choose your audience and other features you might like to customize and also, you can closely watch how your ads are doing. The ads created on Facebook Ads Manager runs on both Facebook and Instagram.
To begin, you need a Facebook page, if you don’t have one yet, you have to create one and once this is done, then you can move to Stage One.
STAGE ONE: CONNECT TO THE FACEBOOK BUSINESS MANAGER
To do this, visit business.facebook.com. Then click on Create Account once the page loads. Enter a name you want for your business. Choose the primary page and you would be required to fill in your name and your official work email address and other information which are required. Once you’ve successfully done this, you can move on to the next stage.
STAGE TWO: CONNECT YOUR FACEBOOK BUSINESS PROFILE AND YOUR INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT
Next, go to the business manager and click on the menu located at the top left corner. Then, choose Business settings and it will lead you to a menu where you can choose Instagram Accounts which is the fourth option under Accounts.
This will lead you to a new page where you can click +Add to add your Instagram Account. Provide your username and password, then click next. Tick the box next to your ad or ads as the case may be so your ad account can use the Instagram account and then choose to save changes. Just like that, voila! You’re one step closer to your Instagram ad.
STAGE THREE: PICK YOUR OBJECTIVE
To begin, go to Ad Manager and click Create on the left side of the page, this will take you to a page where you can create your campaign. Ad Manager gives you the option to pick Guided Creation which shows you how to create a Facebook Ad campaign, this is more helpful to new marketers but for experienced marketers, Quick Creation is the best option. But for this article, we’ll pick Guided Creation.
Once you choose this, Facebook Ads Manager allows you to pick your marketing objective. This includes:
- Brand Awareness which lets you spread your ad to those who have never heard of you.
- Read which allows you to choose how many people see your ad.
- Traffic which helps you choose if you want the traffic directed to your website or the app store for your app if you have one.
- App Installs which allows you get users to download your app once they see your ad.
- The engagement which helps you increase the number of comments, shares, offer claims, likes and shares you receive.
- Video Views which also helps you increase the number of views a video gets.
- Lead Generation which lets you gather lead info from users who tap on your ad
- Messages which offers you the option of letting users send a message to your brand.
- A conversion which is for sales and conversion of sign-ups on your website and app.
- Catalogue Sales which allows users to see ads for products on your Facebook Catalogs and finally
- Store Visits which helps users locate your store wherever they are.
The default name for your campaign becomes your chosen objective but you can change this if you prefer something more detailed.
STAGE FOUR: FIND YOUR AUDIENCE
The next stage is deciding who your target audience is. Your target options go as far as locations, age, gender, language, behaviours, interest, connection and more. It even allows you to exclude people, you can also choose your audience by if they’ve visited your website, downloaded your app, subscribed to your newsletter and more.
STAGE FIVE: CHOOSE YOUR PLACEMENT
In this section, you decide where you want your ad to appear on Facebook and Instagram. You could choose Automatic Placements which places your ads wherever they’re likely to perform best or you can choose to edit placements if you want to limit where your ad appears.
STAGE SIX: PICK A BUDGET AND SCHEDULE
You can choose a daily budget which offers a maximum amount to spend days or a lifetime budget for an ad with a particular lifespan. You can also decide to either run ads continuously or at particular times of the day.
STAGE SEVEN: GET CREATIVE
It’s time to actually create your ad. Firstly, you have to choose a Facebook ad to associate the ad with. Secondly, you have to pick your ad format, this ranges between carousel, single image, single video, and slide show. Then you choose your pictures up videos, pick a payment option, craft your ad copy and finally click confirm. Congrats! You just created your first Instagram ad.
ADVERTISING ON INSTAGRAM VIA INSTAGRAM
You can market on Instagram directly through the app but simply by promoting an existing post on your Instagram, this helps you to reach an even higher audience. Of course, this all depends on you having a business profile on Instagram. Once you do, promoting any post becomes quite easy.
First go to the post that will be promoted and click Promote under the post, then select your goal. This depends on if you want to increase the number of people visiting your website or the number of people seeing your post.
You can also add a call to action button like sign up or shop now if you want. Instagram offers a default audience for your ad and also allows you to pick your specific audience if you want.
After this, choose your budget, your ad duration and click on the button Create Promotion. That covers it, you’re done!
